Northern New York Bus Accident Injures 54 People

February 23, 2004 -- A Canadian bus carrying 48 passengers bound for Miami plowed into a tractor-trailer and two other vehicles at a U.S. Border Patrol roadblock 90 miles north of Albany yesterday, injuring at least 54 people, three critically.

The four-vehicle collision occurred at 2:40 p.m. and shut down the New York State Thruway for more than five hours as helicopters and 18 ambulances transported the most seriously injured to Albany Medical Center and two other hospitals.

Ray Thatcher, emergency coordinator for Essex County, where the accident occurred near North Hudson, said the cause of the crash was being investigated.

Thatcher said the bus picked up its passengers in Quebec.
