News Reporter Aided by FDNY in Sept., Woke from Coma Over the Weekend

November 17, 2003 -- Rebecca Spitz, the NY1 reporter who awoke from a coma this weekend nearly two months after being injured while on assignment in Harlem, will soon enter a rehabilitation center as part of her recovery, a source close to the family said yesterday.

In the next week or two, Spitz, 31, will be transferred out of St. Luke's Hospital to a New York City-area facility so she can continue with her recuperation, the source said.

"We feel pretty encouraged she'll have a strong recovery from what we've seen so far," said the source.

Spitz, who had been in a chemically induced coma since her Sept. 19 accident, regained consciousness around 10 a.m. on Saturday morning and spoke, saying she was thirsty and cold.
