Va. Paramedic Describes Hurricane Irene Response
Audrey Snyder deployed with Task Force II of the local Thomas Jefferson EMS Council. Her team was often forced to cut through fallen trees to reach homebound patients whose portable oxygen supplies had run out and to meet other emergency medical needs.
Tx. Combat Doc Discusses Care of Saddam Hussein
In 2001, Dr. Sudip Bose was among those to deploy to Iraq. He would serve 15 months on the front lines there--one of the longest combat tours completed by a physician since World War II.
Tenn. Paramedic Demoted After Drug Mistake
When Melvin Davis was carried into the emergency room last Thursday, a doctor noticed something wasn't right--he had been given the wrong medication.
EMS Education
Today, medics involved in tactical operations, mass casualty events, disasters or working in rural communities should consider the tourniquet as another method to prevent extremity exsanguinations. A tourniquet could be the difference between whether a patient with extremity hemorrhaging lives or dies.
The Corner Office
Fix Real Problems, Not Perceived Ones
It's easy to point fingers or rush to judgment when a systemic problem arises at your agency. But taking a more measured approach to evaluating and fixing a problem can often yield surprising--and beneficial--results.
EMS Life
Write Two Posts, Call Me in the Morning
There's often great therapeutic value in the simple act of getting it off your chest. Talking to a loved one, a professional listener like counselor or clergy, or even a total stranger can be a great way to shed emotional weight and feel a bit brighter after a tough experience. Just ask San Francisco fire-medic Justin Schorr.
EMS Operations
Protocols must allow the bottom half of the class, as it were, to operate safely. But what about the other half--the higher achievers? Are those same protocols holding them back?
Prehospital Profiles
South Carolina Remembers EMS Personnel
Most of us hope to be remembered long after we're gone, and that will certainly be the case for EMS providers in South Carolina.
Featured EMS Magazine Article: September 2011
In the Field: Masimo Rad-57 Handheld Oximeter
Riverside Fire Authority (RFA), a fire-based ALS agency serving 180 square miles in and around Centralia, WA,recently purchased a Rad-57 unit while in the process of enhancing its firefighter rehabilitation program. Two questions arose as a result of this purchase. The first involved the rationale and science driving the factory alarm settings. The second was whether county EMS protocols would need to be revised to allow BLS-level personnel to use the device.
Continuing Education
Prehospital Management of the Anemia Patient
This article explores the anatomy and physiology of the blood, pathophysiology of anemia, clinical manifestations of the disease and prehospital management of complications associated with the disease. Plus reviews one of the more common etiologies of anemia--sickle cell disease--that EMS encounters in the prehospital environment.
This CE activity is approved by EMS World Magazine, an organization accredited by the Continuing Education Coordinating Board for Emergency Medical Services (CECBEMS), for 1.5 CEU. After reading the article, visit www.rapidce.com to take the CE test.
