New York Responders Cut 600-Pound Man from Trailer
A 600-pound Long Island man who fell and lay helpless on the floor of his mobile home for nearly two days was rescued early yesterday by an army of firefighters who cut a large hole in the side of the trailer to carry him out, authorities said.
David Schock, 57, who lived alone at Thurm's Estates in Calverton, dialed 911 on Sunday at 7:50 p.m., saying he was an "obese" man who had fallen and could not get up since Friday night.
It was not known how he was able to reach a phone.
When the Wading River Fire Department responded, firefighters realized they could not carry Schock out the front door because he was too big, Riverhead Town officials said.
The firefighters called the nearby North Patchogue Fire Department for assistance.
The team of rescuers cut a 10-foot wide hole in the side of the trailer - which allowed paramedics to reach Schock and carry him out on an extra-large, heavy-duty stretcher at about 3 a.m., officials said.
Schock, who neighbors said had been homebound for years, was taken to Stony Brook University Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition.
