Ambulance Fire Injures West Virginia Attendant

An out-of-state ambulance was damaged and a member of its crew hurt during a vehicle fire Saturday night near the entrance to the Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital emergency room, officials said.

Roanoke Fire-EMS spokeswoman Tiffany Bradbury said the fire started inside a Greenbrier, W.Va., ambulance about 8 p.m. The parked ambulance was in the process of transporting a patient to Roanoke.

"EMS crews noticed the fire and pulled the attendant and patient out of the ambulance," Bradbury said.

Although the patient was unhurt, Bradbury said, the ambulance attendant was treated for burns.

There were no injuries to Roanoke Fire-EMS personnel.

The incident was under investigation Saturday night, and neither the cause nor a damage estimate was known.
