New York City Offers Medic School to Teens

City teenagers can now become emergency medical technicians while they go to high school under a program being offered at a Brooklyn school.

About 100 teens are in the first class being offered the program at the FDNY's HS for Fire and Life Safety on Pennsylvania Avenue in East New York.

"I was excited and happy to hear that they're giving us an opportunity that you don't find around the corner," said 17-year-old junior Araceli Arenas, who dreams of being a paramedic.

Under the new initiative, kids take EMT classes two days a week during their last two years to prepare for the state certification exam.

This afternoon, FDNY officials will be talking to the students at the school about the program to kick off "Fire High's" third anniversary and the start of Fire Prevention Week.
