Gas Leak in China Mine Kills at Least 20

Nov. 10--BEIJING -- Twenty miners died on Thursday in a gas leak at a pit in China's south-western province of Yunnan, media reports said.

The accident occurred at the Sizhuang Coal Mine near the city of Qujing early Thursday, the state-run Xinhua news agency said.

Another 23 miners were reportedly trapped underground.

Rescue efforts were under way involving 30 firefighters, 100 other rescuers and 300 medical staff, the report said.

Eight miners died last week in an accident in central China. Another 45 were rescued from that mine Saturday after being trapped for 40 hours following a rock burst in a mine shaft.
