Pregnant Mich. Woman Recovering After Being Burned, Shot

A woman nine months pregnant is expected to be released from the hospital soon after suffering burns and being shot once in the back, according to police.

The 22-year-old woman is being treated at Detroit Receiving Hospital and is in stable condition after being abducted outside a home in Warren, driven to Detroit, set on fire and shot, Warren Police Lt. Dan Beck said today.

"She's pretty good -- she may even be released pretty soon," Beck said this morning.

Two men are in custody in connection with the crime, one of them the father of the woman's baby, Warren Police Commissioner Jere Green said. The man was taken in for questioning Saturday, Green said.

The second suspect was arrested Sunday, Green said, and both men are being held on attempted murder charges.

Police did not release additional details about each suspect's alleged involvement in the crime. Beck said they could be arraigned as soon as Tuesday, depending on when warrants are issued by the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office.

The woman was abducted early Saturday after dropping her baby's father off at his home in Warren, police said. Officials did not release the woman's name or details of her injuries.

"She's expected to make a recovery," Warren Police Sgt. Dave Geffert said Sunday. An ultrasound was performed, and the baby appeared to be fine, he said.

Geffert said the 22-year-old woman returned from a movie with the baby's father and left him at his house in the 8500 block of Sherman in Warren. She was approached from behind, Geffert said, and her hands, feet and eyes were bound with duct tape.

She was forced into her car and driven to an unknown location in Detroit, where she was doused with lighter fluid, set on fire and shot once in the upper back, he said.

The woman was able to put the fire out quickly by rolling on the ground.

"Right after the assailant had shot her, he fled the scene," Geffert said. "I'm saying 'he' because she reported a male voice, unknown description."

Her attacker or attackers fled, leaving her car behind. She was able to break free from the duct tape, drive to a gas station in Detroit and call her mother.

Her mother came to meet her, and as they drove toward Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, they flagged down Royal Oak police officers, Geffert said.
