BRIEF: Car collides with school bus, sending 10 students to the hospital
Oct. 16--Ten children were taken to hospitals for minor injuries Wednesday after their school bus collided with a car in Detroit, according to police and school officials.
The bus was traveling west on Cathedral about 4:40 p.m. when a dark-colored Dodge Charger heading south on Heyden disregarded a yield sign, said Kelly Miner, spokeswoman for the Detroit Police Department. The bus was carrying students from Dixon Elementary-Middle School.
Five students were taken to Children's Hospital of Michigan and five to DMC Sinai-Grace Hospital, Detroit Public Schools spokesman Steve Wasko said in an e-mail. After walking off the bus, the students indicated they had possible neck and back injuries, he said.
Miner said the students ranged in age from 10 to 12. They complained of minor injuries, she said.
The woman behind the wheel of the Charger continued driving after the accident, Miner said. The vehicle was later found abandoned in the area.
Wasko said the vehicle struck the bus on a front corner, causing minor damage.
He didn't specify which of the district's transportation service providers was operating the bus.
