Nine Killed, Two Injured in Kentucky House Fire
EDITOR'S NOTE -- The victims included eight children and an adult, local media is now reporting.
GREENVILLE, Ky. (AP) — A fire official says authorities believe as many as nine people have been killed in a house fire in western Kentucky.
Greenville Assistant Fire Chief Roger Chandler says 11 people lived at the home in Muhlenberg County, and two were flown to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn., for treatment.
Chandler said the blaze was reported at 2 a.m. CST Thursday, and crews were still at the scene four hours later.
He directed other questions to Kentucky State Police spokesman Stu Recke. Recke did not immediately return a call for comment.
Greenville is in a rural area of the state, about 130 miles southwest of Louisville. Census figures show Greenville had a population of just more than 4,000 people in 2010.
