Bomb Threat Causes N.C. High School Evacuation

Wes Wolfe

May 23--The call to dispatch police, firefighters and emergency services personnel went out around 1:29 p.m. as word came in of a bomb threat at Kinston High School.

First responders and KHS administrators investigated the incident as students, faculty and staff evacuated to the football field, according to school policy.

"The Kinston Department of Public Safety and the staff at Kinston High School did a walkthrough of the building after everyone was evacuated," KDPS spokesman Woody Spencer said. "We secured the area. Fire and rescue (personnel) staged across Highway 58 -- they were standing by in case they were needed. But, nothing was found and everybody was let back in."

Lenoir County Public Schools spokesman Patrick Holmes said everyone performed as according to policy and the only real effect of the threat was the loss of about an hour's instruction time.

The identity of the person calling in the threat and the reason behind it wasn't known as of press time.
