Honor goes to veteran Hurst paramedic

March 24--HURST -- Paramedic Cody Lammons thought 2014 was just like any other year, busy with answering medical calls and training new paramedics at the Hurst Fire Department.

It wasn't.

Lammons' emergency care and his training skills earned him the Paramedic of the Year award for 2014.

"It was a complete shock," Lammons said in a recent interview. "I knew others had done some great work, but I just didn't have any idea that I would win it."

Fire administration officials voted Lammons the award after he was nominated by fellow firefighters.

"Cody is an example of what a true patient advocate is," said Hurst Fire Chief John Brown. "He is always looking out for the best interests of his patients and fellow firefighters. He is quick to share his knowledge and experience with all and especially with new hires as a training officer. He is an excellent paramedic, an excellent firefighter and the HFD is proud to have him."

Lammons has been a firefighter/paramedic for 14 years. He worked at MedStar and the Crowley Fire Department for eight years. The last six years have been in Hurst, where he serves as a field training officer instructing incoming paramedics.

"Not just one single episode can measure the actions of someone deserving the honor paramedic of the year, but it's a multitude of events that allow this award to be bestowed on an individual," said Hurst fire Lt. Brent Craft. "Cody is a steward of EMS by always providing superior emergency care and being an advocate for patients and their families."

Craft noted that Lammons strives to expand his emergency care knowledge through educational opportunities.

"Cody's paramedic skills, knowledge, and abilities inspires and motivates others to increase their level of skills and expertise," Craft said.

For Lammons, 2014 turned into quite a year.

"It just seemed like another year for me," Lammons said.
