Wreck Involving Ambulance Injures 6 in Ky.

Dec. 02--Six people were injured Monday in a wreck involving a Harlan EMS ambulance and two minivans on Alumni Drive in Lexington. The accident happened about 2:20 p.m.

Lexington police Lt. Jesse Harris said the ambulance, which was taking a boy and a female family member to the hospital, was inbound on Alumni. An outbound van had pulled over for the ambulance when it was hit by another outbound van, which then went into the oncoming lane and collided head-on with the ambulance, Harris said.

The driver of the ambulance, a paramedic in the back, and the child and woman were taken to the hospital, as was the driver of the minivan that hit the ambulance, Harris said. None of their injuries was thought to be life-threatening, he said.

Battalion Chief Joe Best of the Lexington Fire Department said a sixth person was treated at the scene.

About 4:30 p.m., emergency crews were awaiting a wrecker to remove the ambulance, which was off the road and stopped against a wooden fence. Its front end was heavily damaged.

Alumni Drive between Edgewater and Lakeland drives, which was closed in both directions after the accident, reopened about 5 p.m.
