Paramedics Use Naloxone to Save Mich. Inmate

Carol Thompson

Aug. 16--TRAVERSE CITY -- An inmate in Grand Traverse County's jail was revived after paramedics administered an overdose-reversal drug, authorities said.

Emergency medical service responders and Traverse City police officers responded to the jail Tuesday at 1:30 a.m., where a 23-year-old Manton man was unresponsive and was believed to have overdosed, said Traverse City Police Capt. Kevin Dunklow. Paramedics administered naloxone and took him to Munson Medical Center.

Deputies are reviewing videotape recorded at the jail to see if the man ingested drugs while in custody, said Grand Traverse County Undersheriff Nate Alger. They don't know what drugs he took or when he took them.

"That drug will compound as it metabolizes in your system," Alger said.

The man was arrested Monday at about 3:45 p.m. outside Best Buy in Garfield Township on suspicion of possessing an unlawfully concealed, unregistered and stolen gun, said Grand Traverse County sheriff's Capt. Chris Clark. A Best Buy employee called police to report a man carrying a pistol in his waistband acting strangely in the store.

"He appeared to be possibly intoxicated, fidgeting all over the store," Clark said.

The man had one firearm tucked in the small of his back and another near his groin, Clark said.
