Apps Can Tell You of Potential COVID Exposures

EMS World Staff

Your phone may be able to tell you if you’ve been exposed to COVID-19, but few people are taking advantage.

About 100 million Americans now have access to pop-up notifications from local health authorities when they’ve spent time near someone who later tested positive for the coronavirus, the Washington Post reported Nov. 18 (no paywall).

The notifications only occur, however, if users enable the feature.

The Post first reported on such an app in Virginia three months ago, but fewer than 500 people have used it to send alerts about positive tests. However, a newer system in Colorado is seeing faster adoption.

Other states with systems include Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Michigan, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Washington, D.C., and Wyoming. Arizona, California, Hawaii, Oregon, and Washington are working on them
