Statement from the International Association of EMS Chiefs on the Tragic Death of Firefighter/Paramedic Adam Finseth
In a profession dedicated to safeguarding lives, it is with profound sorrow that we confront the devastating news from Burnsville, Minnesota, where we have lost a valued member of our EMS family. Firefighter/Paramedic Adam Finseth of the Burnsville Fire Department made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, responding to a call that ended tragically. This loss is not just a blow to the community he served with distinction but to all of us who stand in solidarity with those committed to the noble cause of saving lives.
The circumstances surrounding the death of Firefighter/Paramedic Finseth, alongside Police Officers Paul Elmstrand and Matthew Ruge of the Burnsville Police Department, are a grim reminder of the dangers faced by EMS every day. Our brothers and sisters rush towards danger to offer aid and comfort to those in their most vulnerable moments. Yet, they are increasingly met with violence, a trend that has escalated to unacceptable levels.
This was the circumstances of Paramedic Finseth’s death. While rushing to provide aid to one of the officers stricken in gunfire, without fear or hesitation, his life was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire by the assailant.
The International Association of EMS Chiefs mourns the loss of Adam Finseth and extends its deepest condolences to his family, colleagues, and the Burnsville community. His dedication to his profession, his bravery, and his sacrifice will not be forgotten.
This tragic event underscores the urgent need for measures to protect EMS providers and all first responders.
