Product Application: Easy Vehicle Decon in Minutes
In the early days of the Ebola outbreak of the mid-2010s, patient transport companies and first responder agencies across the nation became concerned for the safety of their crews who could potentially be exposed to this largely unknown and deadly pathogen.
Bossier City Fire Department in northwest Louisiana was one of them. As department leaders were investigating decontamination systems for their buildings and vehicles, they met with a representative of AeroClave, a Florida-based manufacturer of decontamination technologies for industry sectors from schools to restaurants to aircraft and hospitals.
“We were drawn to the compact design and ease of use of the units,” recalls Jeff Watson, chief of EMS for the Bossier City FD. The AeroClave RDS 3110 is a rugged, lightweight, and man-portable decontamination system that can effectively treat spaces up to 5000 cubic feet.
Today Bossier City FD has AeroClave units permanently installed in all of its 9 fire stations in addition to portable units for the service’s 5 ALS ambulances. Word spread throughout other municipal services, and Bossier City’s jail and water departments have the units installed as well. Initially purchased to safeguard against Ebola, the units were in place well before COVID-19, and Bossier City FD will be using them when the next deadly pandemic inevitably arrives, Watson says.
The 3110 is simple to use and requires minimal operator training. It is fully self-contained and can be set up and operating in minutes. The RDS 3110 can be operated in either an aerosolized application mode for hands-free room decontamination or a hand-applied mode.
Bossier City FD, which runs about 12,000 EMS calls a year, fully fogs and sprays down its vehicles and equipment after every call with the portable units. The stations are regularly decontaminated with permanently installed AeroClave systems.
The environmentally friendly disinfectant solution produces no harmful byproducts, contains no VOCs (volatile organic compounds), and is 100% biodegradable, according to the company’s website. No mixing is required. AeroClave’s customer service is superior, and the company is responsive to questions and requests, Watson says.
“In this age EMS administrators have to do their due diligence for the safety of their crews,” Watson says. “The peace of mind this system provides for both our providers and our patients is priceless.”
