Tuition-Free EMT Training Academy Students Graduate

A graduation ceremony for the Gloucester County Emergency Medical Services’ (GCEMS) first Emergency Medical Technician Training Academy will be held on Saturday, June 15 at 4 p.m. in the auditorium of the Government Services Building (1200 North Delsea Drive, Building B) in Clayton.
Freeholder Director Robert M. Damminger said, “This creation of this EMT Training Academy is the first of its kind. We are very excited that we will have eighteen graduates of this tuition free program that will make them eligible to transfer to part-time employment within GCEMS.”
The 18 students began their training in September of 2018. In addition to didactic sessions held in the classroom, the EMT students also completed clinical observation shifts in area emergency departments and the Shady Lane Nursing Home. Additional clinical observation time was completed with GCEMS crews and Inspira Mobile Intensive Care (paramedic) crews.
Following graduation, the students will sit for the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians EMT certification examination and receive both a National Registry and New Jersey EMT certification. The students will then undertake an intensive three-month internship with GCEMS crews, providing direct patient care under the watchful eyes of seasoned GCEMS staff members.
Freeholder Dan Christy said that at the conclusion of the internship program, the interns will be eligible to transfer to part-time employment with the County of Gloucester and GCEMS.
“The GCEMS initial EMT Training Academy is unique in that the one-year program was offered tuition free to the students and could result in employment with the County of Gloucester,” said Christy, Liaison to GCEMS.
Christy said, “Gloucester County’s EMS is an award-winning service and the professional staff provides high quality services to their patients. By training future EMTs, GCEMS can provide their outstanding education and practices to those accepted into the program without the $1,500 price tag it would cost to be privately trained. This is an exceptional opportunity for someone who is interested in pursuing a career in EMS.”
The certification course and internship consist of 649 hours of education followed by a 144- hour residency ride-a-long program.
The application period for the next Academy class, scheduled to start in September 2019, is now open.
Applicants would be required to a three-year service agreement with GCEMS. While GCEMS is not guaranteeing those who successfully complete the training employment, the intention is to hire them as part-time/per-diem EMTs with GCEMS.
Classroom sessions meet every Friday from September to June with appropriate breaks around major holidays. All clinical assignment requirements are 12 hours per week, beginning at week 15 and include an Emergency Department Observation, Advance Life Support Observation and Internship at Gloucester County EMS. Residency program requires 12 hours of ride-a-long time at Gloucester County EMS per week.
Student requirements:
- High School Diploma (or equivalent)
- At least 18 years old at the time of application submission
- Successfully pass an American Heart Association BLS for the Healthcare Provider course
- Pass a background check and drug screening
- Submit to PPD testing and N95 fit testing
- Attend every class session
- Attend every clinical assignment
- Complete all course work, assignments, exams, skills assessments, projects, etc.
