NREMT Introduces Technology Enhanced Items for EMS Exams
PRESS RELEASE
The National Registry has announced that they will begin to incorporate Technology Enhanced Items (TEIs) on our examinations this coming fall. These items will be created by EMS subject matter experts using the same process we follow to write and review items for all their examinations. They know from industry feedback that these types of items make the testing experience more authentic and engaging for candidates.
What is a TEI?
TEI refers to the format of a test item that uses computer technology to deliver items to more closely simulate situations encountered in clinical practice. The candidate is provided with an examination that more fully assesses EMS candidates. The initial TEIs will incorporate some multiple response type items (more than one answer) with traditional multiple choice (single answer) items. As the NREMT move forward, they will begin to include items that may incorporate multiple graphic images, highlighting, matching, ordered response, and even short video clips. The organization will provide you with information prior to the integration of these new item types on any of the examinations.
Examples of Multiple Response TEIs
The items below are examples of Multiple Response Technology Enhanced Items that you may see on upcoming exams starting this fall. Prior to this enhancement, all items on the examinations were multiple choice items. Multiple choice items require the selection of only one answer option. Multiple Response items contain more than one correct answer option and you are instructed to select the answer options that are correct.
Which of the following are colors? Select the two answer options that are correct.
a. Blue
b. Apple
c. Chair
d. Red
e. Sky
Only options A and D are colors, so selecting both options would be correct.
Which of the following signs or symptoms are associated with asthma? Select the three answer options that are correct.
a. Coughing
b. Stridor
c. Wheezing
d. Shortness of breath
e. Ascites

Options A, C and D are signs or symptoms that could be experienced by an individual during an exacerbation of asthma. Options B, E and F are not signs or symptoms of an asthma exacerbation.
