With the advent of community paramedicine, EMS providers have advanced from providing one message to one place—i.e., a patient status report to the emergency department—to continued two-way communications with the entire care team.

Jenny Rieker, a paramedic for Christian Hospital St. Louis, described the learning curve for providers who might not be native users of information technology.

“We’re finding we have all kinds of different things that we just aren’t used to in EMS,” Rieker said.
