Multidisciplinary Model Optimizes Care of Patients With Type 2 Inflammatory Diseases

Jolynn Tumolo

A formalized multidisciplinary approach to diseases rooted in excessive type 2 inflammatory response, such as atopic dermatitis, asthma, and chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps, is currently the best way to optimize care, according to study findings published in Multidisciplinary Respiratory Medicine.

“The multidisciplinary model should be structured and dedicated, but at the same time simple and flexible in order to not risk slowing down the patient’s care,” wrote study authors.

The authors shared the multidisciplinary set-up for the management of patients with type 2 inflammatory diseases at their organization.

At their core, multidisciplinary teams should include a dermatologist for atopic dermatitis, a pneumologist or allergologist for asthma, and an ear, nose, and throat specialist for chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps, advised authors.

In cases of severe pediatric asthma, the authors recommend pediatrician involvement as well. The team leader differs with the patient’s main presentation.

Under the approach, patients with type 2 inflammatory conditions undergo evaluation for comorbidities. For example, patients with asthma are checked for symptoms of atopic dermatitis or polyposis. Patients then see the most appropriate specialist for further assessment.

To promote optimal treatment, specialists make a shared treatment recommendation for patients who are potential candidates for a biological therapy. Patients received periodic follow up by all specialists involved, who then, as a team, confirm or change the treatment plans as necessary.

Dialogue and collaboration among team members is essential for the process to work. If successful, the approach offers an array of benefits.

“A multidisciplinary team can provide a central point for patient management, improve outcomes and specialist referrals, reduce costs, and guarantee that the most appropriate therapeutic decisions are made,” wrote study authors, “as well as aid in management of adverse events.”
