Timely Diagnosis is Key in Managing Nonradiographic Axial Spondyloarthritis

Samantha Matthews

Study findings show that proper diagnosis of nonradiographic axial spondyloarthritis (nraxSpA) is critical for disease management to avoid loss of function, reduce pain, and improve quality of life.

According to researchers, accurate and timely diagnosis of the underlying disease depends on optimal treatment of nraxSpA, but common symptoms with the absence of radiographic changes can impact diagnosis.

Researchers conducted a narrative review utilizing a PubMed literature search through January 2021, which identified publications covering nraxSpA, differential diagnoses, and disease mimcs.

“This review describes the epidemiology, clinical features, and burden of disease of nraxSpA as it relates to the overall axial spondyloarthritis spectrum and discusses mimics and differential diagnoses of nraxSpA that should be considered when evaluating patients with suspected nraxSpA in clinical practice,” wrote study authors.

An understanding of comorbid conditions like fibromyalgia as well as recognition of clinical features of nraxSpA, will allow differentiation from disease mimics.

“NraxSpA is associated with a substantial burden of disease, and diagnostic delays can negatively affect patient outcomes, as untreated chronic inflammation may lead to irreversible damage,” concluded study authors. “A variety of approved treatments are now available, and patients with nraxSpA should be referred to rheumatologists for appropriate care.”
