The Importance of a Multidisciplinary Approach in Interventional Oncology
Constantino Peña, MD, Miami Cardiac and Vascular and Miami Cancer Institute, Florida, highlights the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in the field of interventional oncology.
By collaborating with physicians in other fields, Dr Peña notes, interventional oncologists are able to explore combination therapies that may improve patient care.

Hi, my name is Constantino Peña, interventional radiologist at Miami Cardiac and Vascular Institute and Miami Cancer Institute.
I think when we look at the [interventional oncology] IO field, we're seeing, again, continued growth in this field. We're seeing that interventional oncology is really one of the four pillars of therapy for interventional oncology.
What I see is a lot of growth in combination therapy. I think our multidisciplinary approach, working with all the different specialists in the oncology space, has really fostered that growth. We now see all our treatments as working together as opposed to being individual treatments.
That is the sole, most important aspect of interventional oncology: working with our other physicians, to get the best treatment for the patient. We're seeing this with hepatic malignancies, but we're also seeing it with very complex musculoskeletal treatments as well as with transcatheter therapies.
