Myeloma Care: Patient and Advanced Practice Provider Perspectives

Featuring Lorinda Coombs, PhD, CNS, FNP-BC, AOCNP

Lorinda Coombs, PhD, CNS, FNP-BC, AOCNP, University of North Carolina Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, Chapel Hill, discusses results from a survey conducted by the Advanced Practitioners Society of Hematology & Oncology (APSHO) in partnership with Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine, that inform patients and advanced practice provider (APP) perspectives on myeloma care. These results were presented at the 2023 JADPRO Live Meeting.

The survey found that:

  • Most multiple myeloma patients (93%) viewed APPs as essential to their care and more than half (61%) felt they could ask their APP questions they did not feel comfortable asking their doctor or oncologist;
  • APPs seek greater access to professional conferences/events, formal trainings, and medical information websites solely dedicated to multiple myeloma;
  • Over 9 in 10 (94%) want more educational resources specifically tailored to multiple myeloma, and the majority (76%) agree more resources and education would help improve the care they provide to patients.

These results lead to the creation of assets and resources for these practitioners in the myeloma space. More information on the survey results can be found in the press release linked here; you may also find an infographic and fact sheet linked here for your use or visit MakeItHAPPenMM.com for a preview of the resources underway.
