Why the relative quiet about a compelling e-cigarette study?
The newly published research review on the properties and effects of e-cigarettes stands to go a long way toward separating fact from fiction about the still relatively new nicotine products. Too bad it appears that much of the general public may never hear about the report.
In my reporting for our May 23 article about the findings of the review of the highest-quality clinical research on e-cigarettes, I heard that some major national news outlets passed on covering the study at all because they had not received an “embargoed” copy of the news release announcing the study's publication (as is customary practice). The news outlets reasoned, therefore, that because they could not plan their coverage of the report until after it had been published in the journal Circulation, it now qualified for the “old news” pile.
To which I wonder: “How can something be 'old news' if virtually no one has reported on or commented about it?” Perhaps these relied-upon news sources should worry more about the value of the information and less about protocol or bruised egos.
