Hand Sanitizer Recalled for Methanol

Adam’s Polishes is recalling 20 lots of Adam’s Polishes Hand Sanitizer after testing by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) identified undeclared methanol in a single lot. According to the November 23, 2022, FDA Enforcement Report, the FDA designated the recall of lot 133475 Class I. The classification warns use of affected products could cause serious adverse health consequences or death.

“Persons who accidently ingest (drink) these products are at risk for methanol poisoning,” Adam’s Polishes stated in a November 5, 2022, company announcement. “Substantial methanol ingestion can result in coma, seizures, permanent blindness, permanent damage to the central nervous system, or death. To date, Adam’s Polishes has not received any reports of injury, illness, or other adverse events related to this recall.”

The other 19 lots of hand sanitizer under recall are 133470, 133471, 133472, 133473, 133474, 133476, 133477, 133478, 133479, 133480, 133481, 133482, 133483, 137731, 137732, 137733, 137734, 139322, and 143327. The lots, which were manufactured under the same conditions as lot 133475, are under Class II recall. The designation signals that use of the product could cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences. A remote possibility of serious harm also exists.

Adam’s Polishes Hand Sanitizer is packaged in 4-ounce (NDC 74943-125-04), 8-ounce (NDC 74943-125-08), and 16-ounce (NDC 74943-125-16) spray bottles and 1-gallon jugs (NDC 74943-125-28). Manufactured by B&B Blending, Northglenn, CO, the hand sanitizer was distributed throughout the United States to internet customers between June 2020 and March 2022.

Adam's Polishes voluntarily initiated the recalls November 5, 2022. The FDA issued the Class I and II designations on November 22, 2022.
