Restore Your Patients` Nails

September 2004

With so many people dealing with dry skin and nail diseases, one cannot have too many options for treatment. That is why you may want to consider adding two new products to your armamentarium. Keralac® Lotion is a 35% urea-based moisturizer manufactured by Doak Dermatologics. Offering ingredients of vitamin E, lactic acid and zinc, Keralac Lotion can promote a favorable pH level, which can increase healing and protect against harmful bacteria, according to the company. Available in 7-ounce and 11-ounce bottles, Keralac Lotion has a light texture and patients can spread it easily to treat larger areas of dry skin conditions including xerosis, ichthyosis and keratosis pilaris. Keralac® Nail Gel, another urea-based Doak product, is a keratolytic that can restore a healthy appearance to nails that have been damaged by common conditions such as onychomycosis and psoriasis, according to the company. Doak says the gel is an effective debriding agent and can help protect against T. rubrum. The company adds that the gel is also useful for softening nails in order to facilitate quicker in-office procedures and safer at-home care. It is available in 18-mL bottles. For offloading and protection of the foot, you may want to check out the Sure Step Neuropathic Charcot Restraint Orthotic Walker (CROW). Manufactured by Seattle Systems, the Sure Step is a custom-molded boot that features a bivalve custom pre-tibial and posterior shell with a rocker bottom sole. The company says it offloads the foot in a manner similar to a TCC but accommodates the needs of each patient. The product reportedly facilitates even distribution of patients’ weight to support mobility while allowing patients to put minimal pressure on their feet. Company: Seattle Systems, Inc. Another Defense Against Bacteria For patients whose shoes are traps for bacteria and fungi, a line of footwear with a high-tech liner may be what they need. Patients may want to try the Sole Defense line of shoes, all of which are lined with the X-Static® fiber, which has a natural layer of silver bonded to it. Manufacturer Acor says the antimicrobial properties of silver will ensure 99 percent of bacteria and fungi are eradicated in two hours. In addition, the company says the X-Static liner binds with ammonia and denatured proteins to reduce odor. It also decreases friction in shoes by displacing heat, according to the company.
