Bone Void Filler Offers Stability In The Correction Of Osseous Defects

   For surgeons looking to facilitate quick postoperative healing for osseous defects with a reduced risk of disease transmission and without the need for a second surgery, a calcium phosphate bone void filler may prove to be beneficial in osteotomy procedures.

   One can use the biocompatible OsteoVation®EX Bone Void Filler to fill bony voids or gaps quickly, and help anchor internal fixation devices, notes the manufacturer OsteoMed.

   OsteoMed says surgeons can complete the OsteoVationEX Bone Void Filler process in a few short steps. The first step is simply mixing the powder and liquid together. The second step is transferring the paste to a syringe for easy bone filling and injecting it into the gap. The third step is ensuring the gap is filled properly. The fourth step is waiting for the paste to cure properly for four minutes. Then surgeons either close the site or place screws in the area for additional procedures.

Facilitating Structural Support And Stability

   Kerry Zang, DPM, a Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, has been using the product since 2005. Dr. Zang says OsteoVationEX is “beneficial in osteotomy-type bunionectomies as it provides increased stability and a uniformly stable base.”

   Shahram Askari, DPM, who has been using the product for the last three years, also praises the enhanced stability with the OsteoVationEX.

    “OsteoVationEX does provide a great alternative as a form of structural support and stability with procedures in the older patient population, especially the patients suffering from conditions such as osteopenia and osteoporosis,” maintains Dr. Askari.

   When one uses OsteoVationEX properly, Dr. Askari says the biocompatible bone void filler can “provide proper grounds for anchoring internal and external fixation during almost any ostotomy or open reduction internal fixation procedure.”

Other Pertinent Points

   Dr. Zang claims that OsteoVationEX solidifies within minutes, making it beneficial for use in calcaneal fractures. Dr. Zang also mentions that OsteoVationEX “is easy to use and gives the surgeon a secure feeling that all the voids are filled.”

   Dr. Zang also cites the biocompatible nature of OsteoVationEX as being a key benefit that minimizes the risk of transferring infection.

   Neither doctor has experienced any complications with OsteoVationEX nor any negative effects. Dr. Askari does recommend cleaning off the remaining amount from the superficial soft tissue layers but says this is necessary with any bone void filler.

   Dr. Askari points out there is “no known data” on mixing (OsteoVationEX) with antibiotics during surgical procedures.”

   As with any implant material, OsteoVationEX is contraindicated in the presence of infection, according to Dr. Zang. Dr. Askari adds that the product is not recommended for use when infection is likely (i.e. in cases of certain open fractures or contaminated wounds).
