A New Advance In Hammertoe Correction
For patients with hammertoe, an innovative device may offer correction while taking anatomical differences and biomechanics into account.

The ArthroBridge® Hammertoe Correction Device consists of a titanium 2.0 mm cannulated compression screw. The manufacturer Agent Medical says the screw thread length provides for intraoperative sizing in 5 mm increments and its hex head design permits insertion and removal of screws without stripping. The company says the device comes in lengths of 15 to 50 mm for hammertoe correction of the second, third and fourth toes as well as the first interphalangeal joint.

In addition, the ArthroBridge’s titanium proximal module component has an outer thread design that facilitates endosteal cortical purchase for component construct stability, notes the company. Agent Medical says the device’s diameters of 4.0, 4.5 and 5.0 mm ensure cortical purchase in differing anatomies.

Let The Healing Flow
A new placental allograft can deliver much needed components to facilitate healing.

The Viaflow Flowable Placental Tissue Matrix is a premixed tissue matrix allograft that is processed from human placental tissues, according to the manufacturer Wright Medical. The company says the anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic proteins in this placental extracellular matrix reduce fibrous tissue growth and potential scar tissue formation.

The product is flowable through a 23-gauge needle and it targets defects quickly and precisely, according to Wright Medical. The company adds that the Viaflow product has a five-year shelf life at ambient temperature.

Improving Interdigital Fusion
Surgeons may have a promising new option to facilitate interdigital fusion in the lower extremity.

The cylindrical Intramedullary Fixation Scaffold™ implant and ingrowth scaffold is indicated for interdigital fusion, according to the manufacturer Metric Medical Devices. The company notes the nitinol device changes its shape instantaneously upon implantation, exerting a high bone fixation force that minimizes gap formation, expanding to lock into bones or shortening to pull bones together.

Surgeons can use the Intramedullary Fixation Scaffold with K-wires for temporary fixation of adjacent joints such as the metatarsophalangeal joint, according to the company. Metric Medical Devices adds that the product comes in a convenient, sterile kit that includes instrumentation to prepare the surgical site.

New Implant For First MPJ Arthritis
An innovative implant recently received Food and Drug Administration Approval for osteoarthritis of the first metatarsophalangeal joint (MPJ).

The Cartiva Synthetic Cartilage Implant is a biocompatible, biomedical polymer implant, which provides a compressible, low friction and durable surface, according to the manufacturer Cartiva. Cartiva notes the implant is made of polyvinyl alcohol and mimics natural cartilage.

The company adds that patients may begin post-op weightbearing immediately as tolerated.
