Surgeons can provide stable fixation for ankle syndesmosis with a new device.

With the Gravity Synchfix Syndesmosis Fixation Device, foot and ankle surgeons can securely provide dynamic fixation for ankle syndesmosis. The manufacturer Wright Medical says the device can facilitate flexible fixation, preserves soft tissue and bone, and also heals ankle ligaments.

The Gravity Synchfix Syndesmosis Fixation Device has an extraosseous medial button attachment to preserve fibular and tibial bone stock, notes Wright Medical. The company adds that the device minimizes soft tissue and neurovascular impingement, as well as having less chance for removal of hardware.

Removing Broken Screws

Surgeons can remove broken screws in the lower extremity with a versatile new system.

The Broken Screw Removal System comes in three different sizes: 2.7 mm, 3.5 mm and 4.5 mm. The manufacturer WishBone Medical says it can remove screws that are broken, stripped and cold-welded.

WishBone Medical notes the devices are available in different configurations including the Pediatric Long Bone Combo Kit (2.0 mm and 2.5 mm K-wires) as well as Three Pediatric Extremity Combo Kits—Small (0.7 mm and 0.9 mm K-wires), Medium (0.9 mm and 1.25 mm K-wires) and Large (1.25 mm and 1.6 mm K-wires). Each system includes two different sizes of wires, protective pin covers and instruments, according to the company.

Revising Implants

An innovative 3D device may be beneficial for addressing complications due to implant removal.

The MTP Revision System has a 3D printed lattice bone segment and plate construct to treat large deformities and bone loss stemming from implant revisions, according to the manufacturer Additive Orthopaedics. The company says the system comes in multiple sizes, allowing the surgeon to choose the appropriate plate option and bone segment option, facilitating a rigid revision structure.

Additive Orthopaedics notes the system’s segments have a 79 percent open honeycomb lattice structure and high coefficient of friction. The MTP Revision System also features joint compression capabilities in the wedges as well as a plate and segment connection screw to create a solid structure that limits the forces across the plate and osteotomy.

Dynamic Tibiotalocalcaneal Fusion

A recently approved nitinol device can offer reliable fusion at the tibiotalocalcaneal joint.

DynaNail XL TTC Fusion System has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k) clearance, notes the manufacturer MedShape. DynaNail is available in lengths of 260 mm and 300 mm lengths, and the company says the intermetatarsal nail can better accommodate patients with longer tibial anatomies. The company adds that the device’s nitinol properties can reduce stress risers in bone and decrease the chance for tibial fractures.

MedShape notes the DynaNail XL has a design similar to the original 220 mm version but also has a proximal taper for easy insertion through the tibial isthmus. The company adds that the device has an extra proximal screw hole to facilitate more stability via an optional cortical screw.
