Pre-conference Workshops Address A Wide Scope of Challenges

At this year’s American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons’ Annual Scientific Conference in Los Angeles, CA, attendees will have the opportunity to take part in a variety of pre-conference workshops before the official scientific sessions even start. Opportunities span from billing and coding to cadaveric workshops.

Minimally invasive surgery is one topic on the agenda. Specifically, from reconstruction to trauma, this cadaveric session chaired by Ryan McMillen, DPM, FACFAS, will focus on osseous MIS procedures, according to the ASC website. Additionally, a hands-on cadaveric lab chaired by Ronald Ray, DPM, FACFAS will focus on 2 specific challenging case scenarios; a young patient with biplanar midstarsal joint collapse, and another with chronic anteromedial ankle pain. Per the agenda, hands-on experiences will include instruction on various techniques for Evans calcaneal osteotomy, Cotton osteotomies, naviculocuneiform fusion, gastrocnemius recession, transplant of articular cartilage, OATS, and medial talar dome osteochondral allograft transplantation. Brandi Johnson, DPM, FACFAS is chairing a soft tissue cadaveric track that will include topics such as deltoid repair, various tendon transfers, Achilles repair, spring ligament pathology and lateral ankle stabilization.

From a practice management standpoint, there are two sessions related to billing and coding. ACFAS shares that one focuses on what’s new in 2023 for various surgical coding scenarios, and the other is a fundamentals course that hones in on the basic, vital concepts. Lastly, focusing on foot and ankle surgical education, the agenda reveals that ACFAS is hosting a Residency Directors Forum (co-hosted by COTH) and a Residents’ Day to address topics vital to those involved as residency learners or educators.
