Evolution of Psychotherapy Conference Promises 'Refreshed' Agenda and Voices

The 37th annual Evolution of Psychotherapy conference will focus on change, development, and growth while expanding on the fundamentals of effective care and emerging practices, according to a news release by the event’s organizers. The event will take place December 14 through December 16, 2022, in Orlando, Florida, and offers a chance to earn more than 60 continuing education/continuing medical education (CE/CME) credits in specific areas required for re-licensure, including domestic violence, ethics, and telehealth.

“This year at Evolution of Psychotherapy Orlando, we are embracing what an evolution truly means: to change, develop, and grow,” said Jeffrey Zeig, PhD, conference chairman and director and founder of The Milton H. Erickson Foundation. “It is a practice-changing event crafted by experts and inspired by our attendees, where foundational principles will inspire future practices.”

Evolution features a returning core group of more than 20 world-renowned faculty as well as new voices who will be part of the inaugural reTHINK sessions. The reTHINK sessions, moderated by Saundra Jain, MA, PsyD, LPC, adjunct clinical affiliate, University of Texas at Austin School of Nursing, will explore future-focused topics including psychedelics and technology-augmented psychotherapy. These sessions are designed to spark conversations examining the current challenges in mental health, organizers said.

ReTHINK sessions will include the following speakers:

• Gowri Aragam, MD, clinical instructor in psychiatry, Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts General Hospital; co-founder, Stanford Brainstorm Lab for Mental Health Innovation at Massachusetts General Hospital
• Heather Berlin, PhD, associate clinical professor of psychiatry and neuroscience, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai
• Robin Carhart-Harris, PhD, Ralph Metzner Distinguished Professor of Neurology and Psychiatry, and director of Psychedelics Division, Neuroscape, University of California San Francisco
• Mary-Frances O’Connor, PhD, associate professor, University of Arizona
• Sheryl Gonzalez Ziegler, PhD, founder, The Child and Family Therapy Center at Lowry

The conference will kick off with 2 preconference sessions exploring ethical decision-making and adolescent and young adult treatment strategies before moving into the first keynote session with Dan Siegel, MD, co-founder and executive director of the Mindsight Institute.

Dr Siegel’s keynote, moderated by Zeig, will be a “workshop of immersive and interactive gatherings…[exploring] the nature of ‘self’ from scientific, Indigenous, and contemplative perspectives [addressing] the possible ways in which a modern cultural construction of a ‘solo self’…may be at the root of many of the challenges we face today.”

To help close out the conference using her ground-breaking brain scanning studies of personality (using fMRI) and biopsychological data, Helen Fisher, PhD, senior research fellow, The Kinsey Institute, Bloomington, Indiana, and chief science advisor to Match.com, will deliver a keynote discussing the neuroscience of personality.

Additional keynote speakers include the following:

• Otto F. Kernberg, MD, FAPA, professor of psychiatry, Weill Cornell Medical College
• Stephen Porges, PhD, distinguished university scientist, Indiana University, and author of The Polyvagal Theory
• Diane Ackerman, MA, MFA, PhD, bestselling author of 26 books of prose and poetry

Evolution is open to professionals in mental health and health-related fields in the following areas: marriage and family therapists, clinical and counseling psychologists, psychiatric social workers, pastoral counselors, psychotherapists, psychiatrists, physicians, nurse practitioners, counselors, and graduate students.
