Pregnancy Risks With Psoriatic Diseases
Pregnant women with psoriasis (PsO) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA) may experience increased risk of adverse maternal events, recent research revealed.
The investigators searched multiple electronic databases and reference lists of selected articles, pooling data from random-effects models. Their analysis included observational studies that reported at least one pregnancy outcome among women with PsO or PsA, compared to the general population.
“Analysis showed pregnant women with psoriatic diseases have significantly higher risk of adverse maternal outcomes compared with general population, including caesarean delivery, preterm birth, (pre)eclampsia, gestational diabetes, and gestational hypertension,” the authors reported.
The researchers did not find statistically increased risks of severe fetal complications in pregnant patients with psoriatic diseases, such as congenital malformations and neonatal mortality.
“Subgroup analysis found similar results in women with either psoriasis or PsA regarding maternal outcomes and the magnitude of risk estimates seems to be greater in PsA, though without statistical difference,” the authors concluded.
