Adults With and Without Atopic Dermatitis Choose Moisturizers for Personal Satisfaction
According to a study published in the Asian Pacific Journal of Allergy and Immunology, physicians should continue to educate patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) on the importance of using moisturizers to restore the skin barrier.
Researchers aimed to evaluate and compare the factors influencing moisturizer selection in adult patients with and without AD in a cross-sectional web-based survey.
The study enrolled 1,195 participants with a mean age of 46.5 years. A total of 50 participants were classified as having an AD diagnosis. Participants generally used moisturizer every day or 2 times per day and preferred a non-sticky moisturizer with a pleasant odor. Personal satisfaction was the most common reason for selecting a moisturizer. Participants applied moisturizer most commonly to the extremities (85.1%) and face (84.9%). Patients with AD were more likely to use a moisturizer if recommended by a physician and choose a moisturizer with a pH of 5.5 and anti-inflammatory properties. All participants preferred liquid soap over bar soap.
“Our results showed that most participants have basic knowledge of how to use a moisturizer,” concluded the study authors. “Physicians' suggestion influenced the selection of moisturizer in AD patients.”
