Efficacy, Mode of Administration, and Side Effects are Important in AD Treatment Preferences

Lisa Kuhns, PhD

According to an article in Journal of Dermatological Treatment, atopic dermatitis (AD) treatment attributes that are the most important for patients and caregivers are efficacy, mode of administration, and side effects.

Researchers aimed to identify attributes that most greatly influence patient and caregiver treatment preference in children with mild to severe AD. Interviews were conducted with adults, adolescents, and caregivers of children (aged 2-11 years) with mild, moderate, or severe AD. Results were analyzed to generate treatment attributes of greatest importance to participants.

The interviews determined that the most important treatment attributes included efficacy (96.1%), of the speed and duration of symptom relief; mode of administration (66%), or the route of administration, frequency, and convenience; and short-term, long-term, and general side effects (55.3%).

“Efficacy, mode of administration, and side effects were the most important attributes that influenced AD treatment preferences for patients and caregivers across different countries, ages, and disease severity,” concluded the study authors. “These results may assist patients/caregivers/clinicians in shared decision-making discussions to improve treatment adherence and outcomes,” they added.
