Synergistic Approaches to Hand Rejuvenation

Riya Gandhi, MA, Associate Editor

A recent review published in Dermatologic Surgery shed light on the multitude of noninvasive and minimally invasive modalities available for hand rejuvenation, focusing on the efficacy and safety of these procedures both individually and in combination to provide practitioners with practical insights into achieving optimal outcomes.

The PubMed database was searched for peer-reviewed articles encompassing various hand rejuvenation techniques, such as chemical peels, laser and light sources, sclerotherapy, autologous fat transfer, and injectable volumetric fillers.

Among the findings, chemical peels emerged as the least studied modality, with most of the research focusing on the use of fillers and laser/light-based devices. Overall, most studies reported positive results with high patient satisfaction. However, satisfaction rates were noted to be lower in laser/light-based treatments when compared to other modalities. Common post-procedure adverse reactions, such as transient erythema, edema, and pain, were observed, with few studies reporting serious complications.

The review also highlighted the feasibility and safety of same-day procedures for hand rejuvenation. Contrary to concerns, there was no significant increase in adverse effects when combining multiple modalities on the same day.

“Using same-day procedures allows practitioners to address hand rejuvenation from different aspects, seems to improve outcomes, and reduces time spent in the office for patients,” concluded the study authors. “The authors suggest a practical framework for combining cosmetic approaches to achieve the most optimal outcome for hand rejuvenation.”
