Utilizing Autologous Adipose Tissue Injection in Alopecia Treatment

According to a study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, autologous fat grafting (AFG) is a novel and potentially effective modality for treating alopecia. The primary objective in alopecia treatment is often to mitigate inflammation, scarring, and hair loss, as these conditions can substantially impact patients' quality of life and self-confidence, limiting their social interactions.

Researchers aimed to explore the potential benefits of autologous adipose tissue injection, specifically AFG, in the treatment of both scarring and nonscarring alopecia. They conducted a review via a comprehensive search of databases, such as Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed/Medline, and Google Scholar, for relevant studies published until September 1, 2023, using specific keywords related to autologous adipose tissue injection and alopecia.

The findings suggest that AFG is as a novel and potentially effective approach, particularly in the treatment of primary and secondary cicatricial alopecia. In cases of refractory lichen planopilaris, AFG has demonstrated promise by inducing angiogenesis, which supports hair regrowth. Beyond cicatricial alopecia, AFG also holds potential for nonscarring alopecia conditions such as androgenic alopecia and alopecia areata.

“AFG can significantly control inflammatory processes, improve signs and symptoms, and increase hair density and diameter,” the authors concluded.
