A poster presented at the 2023 AAD Annual Meeting found that patient attitudes regarding their alopecia care improved with the use of artificial intelligence-based photography in the clinical setting.

Researchers aimed to examine patient attitudes regarding their alopecia treatment when under the effects of artificial intelligence-based hair counts and microphotography. They conducted a survey study between February and July 2022 at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, MN.  The survey consisted of patient questions that were completed before and following artificial intelligence-based scalp photography. Additionally, there were physician questions included in the survey. Those with repeat photos during follow-up appointments were asked to participate due to the availability of previous comparison photos.

A total of 61 participants completed the survey, with roughly 49.2% diagnosed with female androgenetic alopecia. Of these participants, about 52.5% felt that viewing the artificial intelligence-analyzed photos during their visit was significantly helpful to them, and 54.1% found that their anxiety surrounding their hair loss significantly decreased. About 47.5% strongly agreed and 47.5% agreed that their motivation to continue or start new treatment for their hair loss had increased following viewing the photos.

“Our findings show that the use of artificial intelligence-based photography in the clinical setting may improve alopecia patient care, as it may decrease hair loss related anxiety and increase treatment adherence,” the authors concluded.
