2) What are some unique features of this product? The AMD family of products is unique as it is one of the only product families on the market utilizing Polyhexamethylene Biguanide (PHMB) as the antimicrobial. The product is active whether it is wet or dry and does not delay wound healing. Simplicity is another key feature. For the product to work just take the product out of the package and apply it, as no activation is required.

3) What year was this product first created? The first AMD products were launched in 2001.

Derma Sciences

Princeton, NJ • www.dermasciences.com
(800) 825-4325 or cs@dermasciences.com • Founded 1984

1) How many types or lines of antimicrobial dressings does your company currently make? BIOGUARD and ALGICELL Ag are two antimicrobial dressings in our full advanced wound care portfolio. BIOGUARD® Barrier Dressing is a best-in-class cationic biocide designed for prophylactic infection management and control on acute and chronic wounds. ALGICELL® Ag is a silver calcium alginate dressing with a sophisticated ionic transfer technology, superior absorption, and an optimal gelling profile. ALGICELL Ag provides an effective barrier to bacterial penetration and protects the wound against bacterial colonization.

2) What is your best selling Antimicrobial Dressing? Since it came to the market in 2010, our cationic biocide BIOGUARD Barrier Dressings has quickly gained acceptance with healthcare professionals. Prophylactic antimicrobial or anti-infective products are poised to have positive growth potential in the healthcare marketplace as MRSA and other resistant strains are a continued and growing concern. Surgical Site Infections now top 500,000 cases annually – and MRSA infections cause more deaths each year than HIV/AIDS.

3) What are some unique features of this product? BIOGUARD® Barrier Dressings have been proven to prevent bacterial penetration and inhibit growth within the dressing. The cationic biocide in BIOGUARD – polyDADMAC (poly diallyly dimethyl ammonium chloride) - is intrinsically bound to the dressing making it non-leaching and non-toxic to healthy cells. polyDADMAC ions have a very high charge density, which physically disrupts the cell structure of a pathogen, destroying it and rendering it unable foster bacterial resistance. The product is effective against a broad spectrum of pathogens.

4) What year was this product first created? After being featured in Time Magazine’s 2006 annual “Innovators” issue for its “Novel Intrinsically Micro Bonded Utility Substrate” (NIMBUS), Derma Sciences launched BIOGUARD to the wound care market in 2009.

5) Is this product sold in bulk and if so what are the bulk amounts? See Table 1.

6) Does this product come with any training services provided by your company or application instructions? No.

7) List any add on features that can come with this product. BIOGUARD® Barrier Dressings feature a novel cationic biocide that is significantly larger than other cationic biocides on the market. This relative increase in size helps PolyDADMAC to retain its biocidal activityafter repeated exposure and in the presence of wound fluid and other common wound products such as Dakins Solution and Santyl, demonstrating a consistent efficacy of >99.9% log kill.

8) How does your product stand out from its competition? Due to a patented manufacturing process, the active component within BIOGUARD® Barrier Dressings is intrinsically bound to the substrate – making it non-leaching. This is important as leaching antimicrobials can be toxic to good cells. BIOGUARD® is the only non-leaching dressing of its kind. Additionally, because of BIOGUARD’s active components’ relatively large size, bacteria can not develop resistance to BIOGUARD®. This is a vital benefit of a dressing being considered for prophylactic widespread usage. BIOGUARD® Barrier Dressings offer clinicians a truly unique, cost-effective and ideal line of barrier dressings that can play an important role in a facility’s infection protection program.

9) What is the MSRP price for this product? BIOGUARD is very cost-effectively priced for use as barrier dressing. The pricing varies by product configuration and size.

10) Does this product come with any training services provided by your company or application instructions? At Derma Sciences, we strive to deliver strong clinical support so that you have the confidence to use our broad product line appropriately and achieve consistent positive clinical outcomes.

Towards that goal, our sales representatives and clinical field specialists provide in-depth and personal clinical assistance; we have an eLearning portal, available 24/7, designed to provide clinicians with valuable educational programs, educational product videos, extensive product literature, and protocol management tools; and a well established customer service center available to answer any questions.

11) How can prospective customers get more information on this product? Call a Derma Sciences Sales Representative, go to www.dermascience.com or call our customer service center at (800) 825-4325.
