Product Spotlight: Cutimed® Sorbact® by BSN medical
Featured Product: Cutimed® Sorbact®
Product Launch/Release: January 2011
Description: Cutimed Sorbact represents a new way to treat colonized or infected wounds. Topical antimicrobial products such as silver-based dressings use a chemical agent to kill bacteria or fungi, leaving behind cell debris and endotoxins to disrupt the healing process. Cutimed Sorbact binds bacteria without chemical agents and is coated with DACC (dialkylcarbamoyl chloride), a highly hydrophobic fatty acid derivative that wound pathogens find very attractive. Bacteria and fungi are naturally drawn to the hydrophobic surface and become irreversibly bound. Bound pathogens are removed with each dressing change, which helps clean contaminated, colonized, and infected wounds by reducing the overall bacterial load.

Role in Wound Clinic: Cutimed Sorbact is an alternative infection management product. It can be used to effectively remove bacteria from the wound or prophylactically to prevent an infection. Clinical studies show Cutimed Sorbact can reduce signs of inflammation, reduce or eliminate local infection, and provide easy product handling during dressing changes.1 Studies also show a considerable reduction in malodor in just over four weeks and patients report a significant reduction in pain over the treatment period.2 Without a limited duration of use, Cutimed Sorbact can be used throughout the healing process to prevent further infection, reducing hospital readmissions due to infected wounds.
How is the Product Unique? Cutimed Sorbact is the only advanced wound care dressing on the market with DACC technology that has:
• the capability to bind all types of wound bacteria and fungi such as MRSA,VRE, Staphylococcus, E. Coli, Pseudomonas, and Candida Albicans;
• low risk of allergies;
• no bacterial or fungal resistance –mode of action is based on the physical principle of hydrophobic interaction;
• no healing delay due to bacterial endotoxin release; and
• no chemically active substances to cause cytotoxicity and is suitable for most patients including newborns.
Are Variations/Models of Product Available/Planned? Cutimed Sorbact is available in a wound contact layer, with a light absorption pad, in a round walnut shape for shallow wounds, ribbon gauze for packing or used around the toes, and impregnated with a hydrogel for dry wounds.
Does Product Come With Training Materials? Cutimed Sorbact is supported by field sales and clinical specialists. Also, live CE/CME events, webcasts, and training materials are available.
Customer Testimonial: “We achieved wound closure in a compromised population with this dressing. During treatment we noted slough removal, improved wound bed, and ability to absorb exudate and facilitate closure. Ease of use, decreased pain with dressing changes, timely wound closure, and no side effects were appreciated. Patients ranged from preterm, immunocompromised babies to adolescents.”
