Wound Care Clinic to Participate in Study

The Wound Center of Niagara at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center in New York has been selected to participate in a nationwide clinical study of a therapy for treating chronic, nonhealing wounds. According to the Niagara Gazette, the study began in January and will evaluate the overall effectiveness of Aurix,TM (Nuo Therapeutics Inc., Gaithersburg, MD). The wound center is one of a select number of clinics in the United States conducting randomized, controlled testing involving Medicare patients, officials said.

Aurix is a biodynamic hematogel product approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for wound management and is derived from the patient’s own blood platelets and plasma. Once topically applied, the product stimulates the formation of new tissue to fill in wound defects and reduce wound volume.

The study will involve treating patients living with diabetic, venous, or pressure ulcers in three separate protocols and will help researchers understand the benefits of Aurix therapy to Medicare patients as it is used within the continuum of care and ultimately inform their final long-term reimbursement determination, according to the report.

A two-time recipient of parent company RestorixHealth’s Center of Excellence Award, the Wound Center of Niagara is recognized by the company for meeting or exceeding clinical, operational, and financial benchmarks, including healing outcomes and safety, officials said.

“We are excited to have been selected to take part in this pragmatic approach to studying the potential benefits to Medicare beneficiaries of a promising treatment option,” Michael Mitchell, MD, medical director at the Wound Center of Niagara, told the Gazette. “Clinical results have shown Aurix Therapy to be safe and effective, and we are pleased to be able to offer it to qualifying Medicare patients here in Niagara.”
