What do you feel are the most important features in an EMR systems for the consumer, and why are these important?
The key features in an EMR are “usability” and “process.” Each organization’s approach to EMR usage and clinical process is unique. With the HITECH Act, government research asserts that the use of an EHR/EMR should serve to improve patient care, increase patient safety and simplify compliance within the US healthcare system. In addition, a system should realize long-term cost reduction and minimize errors as well as increasing productivity and administrative efficiency. “Meaningful” data must be submitted to CMS and measure the actual impact on patient care. Data is only “meaningful” when the EMR user understands how to map their clinical and operational processes into their software solution to appropriately capture the work performed. This resulting meaningful outcome data can then be used to improve critical pathways, product formularies, contract fees with payers and patient satisfaction. Benchmarking work with the best clinical and most cost-effective outcomes, the best quality improvement results, and the highest level of patient satisfaction will both improve referrals and enable the development of a profitable business. Many consumers view an EMR as just an electronic version of the patient’s “chart.” But the true value of an EMR system is its ability to serve as the hub for a patient’s care – connecting each step of the wound care continuum to ensure the best possible healing outcomes. The EMR should link the key components of a wound care practice – patient demographics, clinical documentation and care planning, comprehensive billing solutions, and outcomes and benchmarking capabilities – offering dynamic, real-time collection, analysis, and visualization of the wound care program. The EMR should easily integrate with patient information systems outside the wound clinic to enable reliable and HIPAA-compliant exchange of data. Most importantly, the EMR should be continually evolving not only to ensure regulatory compliance and the most up-to-date clinical standards, but also to incorporate new functionality that will enhance efficiencies and allow clinicians to focus more on patient care.

What do you feel are the most important features in EMR systems for the consumer and why are these important?
Automated, Internally Calculated Facility and Physician Billing: The EHR should automatically calculate the facility and the physician level of service based on the documentation. No one should not have to “add points” at the end of the visit to determine the level of service.
  This is the only way to ensure billing compliance. EHRs, which provide this are certifiable under the HITECH act.
Automate Digital Photo Archiving: The EHR should be able to automatically append photos to the designated patient and problem and then erase the camera memory.
  Utilizing Wi-Fi technology, this ensures that there are no errors in photo transmission and no HIPAA breaches if cameras are lost or stolen.
PQRI Reporting: The EHR should be able to provide and transmit information needed for physician quality reporting.
  PQRI is one of the requirements for “meaningful use” of an EHR and ensures annual bonus money based on Medicare charges.
Structured Notes Which Ensure Compliance With All Medicare Required Content for Procedures: Clinicians should be able to build procedure notes from pre-programmed menu options. Pre-programmed menu options ensure that physicians and facilities will not have charges denied due to documentation oversights.
