Lab Research Shows Healing from Use of Tri-Layer Human Placental Membrane Graft

There is currently a diverse market of wound coverings derived from dried human placental membranes available, which have shown success in a wide variety of applications. The authors of this study used two tri-layer human placental membrane grafts-- ArtacentTM AC, a tri-layer graft composed of chorion sandwiched between two layers of amnion, and ArtacentTM Aura (Tides Medical), which has the same composition but uses a frame-line shape—on a large 2 x 2 cm defect in a Sprague Dawley rat. The goal was to differentiate the re-epithelialization rate between the 2 products.

The samples were randomized into 18 implantation sites across 9 animals. The results were evaluated at 4 and 7 days, checking healed wound geometry, remodeling, and re-epithelialization. The results showed, via histological analysis, a “more completed re-epithelization on day 7 and partial healing at day 4.” There was found to be a significant difference between the empty wound and the implantation of both products, though there were no significant differences discovered between the two products.
