Author Karen Bauer, NPC, CWS, CHRN, and colleagues provide insights into the state of pressure ulcers in the United States from 2008–2012. Her retrospective study of the US Nationwide Inpatient Sample database looked at patient demographics, comorbid conditions, and primary outcomes, including length of stay, total hospital charge, inhospital mortality, and discharge disposition. Pressure ulcers were shown to significantly increase patient mortality and were more common in older and malnourished patients. These results confirm the importance of pressure ulcer prevention.
