Thrombotic Complications Associated with COVID-19

Karen Bauer, DNP, APRN-CNP, CWS

Wound care patients often have multiple comorbid factors that put them at risk for COVID-19. We also know that thrombotic and embolic (abnormal blood clotting) complications are common in patients with COVID-19.

Thrombotic complications can happen in any organ. There have been many cases of arterial thrombosis in the legs, which can lead to gangrene and even limb loss! Thrombotic complications may happen in big or small vessels, even when a COVID-19 patient is on anticoagulant medication. These complications can arise during the acute phase of COVID-19 or weeks after and have occurred even in patients with mild COVID-19 symptoms.
