Comparison of the Wicking Ability of a Fenestrated Multilayered Fibrous Dressing Against the Market Leader

Abstract Body: Wound exudate management presents a serious clinical challenge, particularly in heavily draining wounds. When excess moisture builds up in a wound and remains in contact with the wound, it can result in periwound maceration, which can lead to delayed wound healing, or wound deterioration. Using a wound dressing that can handle this fluid effectively is key to creating an environment that promotes wound healing. This abstract describes a multilayered fibrous wicking dressing* that has demonstrated superior wicking capabilities compared to the current leader^ in wicking dressings. The experiment was designed to show the speed at which dressings can wick fluid into it. A sample of the dressing is placed onto a soaked solution-donating foam for a few seconds and the rate of fluid flow is measured. The new multilayered fibrous dressing had a greater rate of fluid flow the current market leader. Previous testing shows that the total absorbency capacity of the multilayered fibrous wicking dressing is significantly greater than the leading competitive three-layer wicking dressing, with 72% more absorption. The total retention capacity of the multilayered fibrous wicking dressing is significantly greater with 60% more retention than the leading competitive three-layer wicking dressing. Combined with previous data showing it is significantly greater absorption capacity compared to the same competitor, this new data further demonstrates its strength in dealing with wounds with high exudate. Further studies are warranted to evaluate clinical implications.
