Mobile App to Assist Health Care for Burn Victims

BACKGROUND: Burn injuries in Brazil are a public health problem. It is estimated that 2 million people each year suffer from these injuries. A lot of burn victims are treated by non-specialists who need more information about appropriate treatments. The use of smartphones has represented a solution to spread specific information to health care professionals by means of medical applications. The development of a mobile application to treat burns is expected to contribute to the decrease of a patient’s morbimortality, therefore causing a great social and economic impact to public health.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this report is to develop a mobile application that will support health care professionals in the treatment of burn injuries.

METHODS: For the application content, the authors used Design Thinking methodology and “Projeto Canvas” to define the app content, and an Android Studio’s development tool was used for the application elaboration.

RESULTS The content was based on the main topics that should be known by the health care professional who will handle the basic care of the burn patient. The application also was developed introducing a bidimensional tool where the calculation of the burned body surface and the volemic correction the patient needs at the first 24 hours of caring were carried out. The application is available in the Google Play store.

CONCLUSIONS: This mobile application was created as a support tool for health care professionals who treat burn injuries.
