Multicomponent, Resistance Training May Improve Physical Performance Among OAs

Both multicomponent and resistance training may be effective in improving the physical performance of older adults (OAs) in long-term care (LTC), according to findings published in the Journal of the American Medical Directors Association.

Study authors performed a systematic review with meta-analysis to assess the effects of multicomponent and resistance training on the physical performance of OAs aged 60 years or over who were nursing home (NH) residents in LTC.

From inception until May 1, 2022, 7 electronic databases including PubMed, Embase, Central, Web of Science, SportDiscus, LILACS, and SCIELO were searched by researchers. The PEDro scale was used to examine the methodological quality and a random-effects model was used to pool mean difference with a 95% confidence interval.

The qualitative review included 30 studies and 1887 OAs, mean age 82.68 years, and70% female. Of the 30 studies, multicomponent training appeared in 19, resistance training in 12 and the meta-analysis included 17 of the studies.

The Short Physical Performance Battery (+1.2 points; +2 points), 30-second chair-stand (approximately +3 repetitions; both) and Timed Up and Go (−4 seconds on mean; both) tests were conducted. As a result, a statistically significant difference (P ≤ .05) was observed in physical performance of OAs after multicomponent and resistance training when compared to control groups.

No significant differences were shown between multicomponent and resistance training in any of the physical outcomes evaluated.

“Further studies with more representative sample numbers, an improvement in methodological quality, and a more specified prescription of the training used are necessary,” concluded researchers.
