Caron Treatment Centers Announces Tieman Center for Research

Caron Treatment Centers, the Wernersville, Pennsylvania-based not-for-profit addition and behavioral healthcare treatment provider, has announced plans to create the Fran and Doug Tieman Center for Research.

“It’s been my life’s work to help people understand that addiction is not a moral failing, it’s a chronic disease that can be managed,” Doug Tieman, whose tenure as Caron president and CEO officially concluded June 30, said in a statement. “Recovery can be a reality for millions; however, we must embrace the essential role that science plays in the prevention and recovery process. For me, this new center is a 'moon landing' that I hope will lead to lifesaving advances for generations of families.”

The center will focus on brain chemistry and medical research to advance science around addiction treatment and prevention. It will also serve as a hub for Caron to expand academic partnerships for research and professional training.

“We need research more than ever to facilitate objective standards and outcomes, which are commonly used in physical medicine but remain inconsistent across the behavioral healthcare sector,” new president and CEO Bradley F. Sorte said in a news release. “The new Fran and Doug Tieman Center for Research will help change that.”

In the long term, the Tieman Center will establish a program for engaging high school and college students interested in research and healthcare careers.

The facility is slated to open later this year, and its construction has been funded with $6 million from private donors raised through efforts from Caron board chair Thomas J. Flynn and board member Benjamin J. Zintak III. A public campaign is now underway to raise an additional $2.5 million.
