Thumper meets AHA guidelines
In response to the new AHA guidelines for CPR, Michigan Instruments has released two new models of its mechanical CPR device, commonly known as the Thumper. The new models are the 1007CC, which provides continuous chest compressions, and the 1007CCV, which provides the features of the 1007CC and adds the capability of ventilation. The new models employ high-impulse chest-compression technology that's been shown to significantly improve resuscitation compared to previous Thumpers and manual CPR. Sustained use of the Thumper has been reported to revive patients to a conscious state. The Thumper is an oxygen-powered piston device that has been an adjunct to many ambulance and fire departments for over 40 years. The new 1007CC and 1007CCV models provide consistent, AHA-compliant compressions with a depth of 1½-2 inches and 50% time in compression and 50% time in relaxation for each cycle.

Ventilator for mass-casualty care
The Model 73X from Impact Instrumentation is the first self-contained portable ventilator developed specifically for transport and mass-casualty care. Impact's design team recognized the likelihood that limited oxygen supplies would deplete during a mass-casualty incident and having an alternative gas source would be imperative. As a result, the "X" may be used with external oxygen-but more important, it is operable via its own internal compressor. In addition, the "X" automatically switches to compressor operation should oxygen supplies become exhausted, and simultaneously triggers an alarm to alert the caregiver. The "X" has a simple user interface that's easily managed by personnel with limited mechanical ventilation experience. It uses adult and pediatric disposable circuits, operates for about six hours between battery recharges, interfaces with industry-standard HEPA or chemical/biologic filters, and includes a digital airway pressure display, alarms suite, airway pressure limiting, continuous operation from external power and more.

LTV 1200 ventilator
Pulmonetic Systems introduces the LTV 1200 ventilator for ICU, PICU, ED, military and patient transport applications. The newest addition to the LTV series, the LTV 1200 provides both invasive and noninvasive modes of ventilation for patients as small as 5 kg. Presets allow for quick setup, automatically configuring initial ventilation settings for the patient type selected. The LTV 1200 also offers a spontaneous breathing trial to assess a patient's ability to be weaned from mechanical ventilation. When the LTV 1200 is used with the LTM graphics monitor, the system can display real-time pressure, flow and volume curves, as well as flow/volume and volume/pressure loops for enhanced patient assessment.

Code Strap: Simple solution to common problem
I-Tec Mfg. has developed the Code Strap, a simple product designed to hold a patient's arms near the body. This device prevents the patient's arms from falling off the backboard or stretcher and getting in the way of people or objects. The Code Strap can also be used to hold an arm for IV insertion. And, if an external defibrillator needs to be used, there is less likelihood of a shock injury from a patient's arms flailing during defibrillation. It is quick and easy to apply: One loop goes over each of the patient's arms, then the middle loop is used for adjusting, which brings the arms near the body. The arms remain near the body in a way that is not considered to be restrained, and the patient has the ability to raise his hands if needed.

BVM designed for safety
The Life Support Products L770 Disposable Bag Valve Mask from Allied Healthcare Products is designed with the safety of both the patient and the caregiver in mind. By separating the bag from the patient valve with the addition of flex tubing, the forces created by squeezing the bag are not transferred to the mask or ET tube. This helps maintain a tight mask seal and prevent dislodging of the ET tube. The added tubing does not affect delivered tidal volume or oxygen concentration. The separation allows the caregiver to walk alongside the patient during transport, ensuring more consistent delivery of tidal volumes to the patient. In an emergency vehicle, the caregiver can remain safely seated and strapped in during transit. The L770 latex-free disposable BVM is available in adult, child and infant/neonate sizes.

All-in-one portable oxygen system
Many departments are discovering the benefits of using an integrated "all-in-one" regulator/cylinder portable oxygen system, with one important aspect being not having to expend precious moments switching regulators from cylinder to cylinder during extended treatments. With Flotec's Flopac, every cylinder has an integral regulator permanently attached and ready to use. Flopac provides this convenience in an all-metal regulator design incorporating its unique InGage internal pressure contents gauge, which is contained completely within the body of the regulator, providing effective protection against external impact damage. InGage's bright three-color coded decal scaling is easily viewed through a window in the regulator's body and is also a 0-4,000-psi gauge, allowing it to be utilized with higher-pressure composite cylinders.

Road flares provide automatic alert
TurboFlare USA's TurboFlare Alert incorporates an electronic motion detector early warning and anti-theft system in the TurboFlare and TurboFlare "SOS" day/night emergency road flares. This new electronic system notifies an officer of any interference from vehicles entering into the TurboFlare traffic control pattern/lane closure, or anyone who may try to steal a TurboFlare from the pattern. If the TurboFlare is struck or picked up, a solid beep is sent to a receiver worn by the officer. The Turbo-Pennants that attach to the top of each flare are high-profile during the day, when the LEDS are not as noticeable. These pennants are also used at night for added protection. Motorists see the reflection and height of the Turbo-Pennants and veer away from the traffic pattern so as not to damage their vehicles.

Interoperability between product lines
General Devices will enhance its Rosetta communications interfaces and CAREpoint EMS Workstation by making them interoperable with the Philips HeartStart MRx monitor/defibrillator. Interoperability between these systems will enable paramedics to send 12-lead ECGs and other physiologic information from the HeartStart MRx over analog and digital radios, as well as cell phones, directly to General Devices' Rosetta Rx Receiving Station or CAREpoint EMS Workstation. Using the Rosetta-Lt communications interface, a 12-lead ECG can be sent in about one minute over a standard two-way radio. Once received by the CAREpoint EMS Workstation, ECGs and other data are presented on a large display, automatically archived into the call log and become available for printout or subsequent forwarding to a cath lab, cardiology center or physician's office.

Oxygen cylinder lift developed for ambulances
I-Tec Mfg. has developed the Tank Boss, a new oxygen cylinder lift designed to raise tanks into ambulances. The purpose of the Tank Boss is to decrease back injuries for EMS workers by offering a zero-lift device. I-Tec owner and retired fire captain Mike Wilson created the Tank Boss to help alleviate back injuries. Per the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians, almost one in two EMS workers (47%) has sustained a back injury while performing their duties. The Tank Boss uses a linear actuator to vertically raise cylinders up to 27". The tanks can then be slid directly into ambulance compartments. Unlike onboard lifts, one Tank Boss can be used for multiple ambulances because it stands alone and can transfer tanks from storage areas to ambulances.
